CONFERENCE OVERVIEW: Alchemy and Sandplay

Date: October 1, 2017

A Primer on Alchemy in Sandplay. Carl Jung recognized that the medieval practice of alchemy, the elusive search for the transformation of base materials into gold, was a compelling metaphor for the psychological process of individuation. Katherine Bradway, the doyenne of Kalffian sandplay in the US, believed that sandplay embodies the alchemical process of coagulation, making the invisible contents of the psyche take physical form in the sandtray. In this course, we will explore the alchemical processes and images of the elements of earth, air, fire and water, the psychological processes they represent, and how they appear in sandplay images.
