MSTG Fall Conference 2016

The 2016 Minnesota Sandplay Therapy Group Fall Conference will be September 30, 2016 through October 2, 2016. This year, two exciting workshops are being offered. Participants can select one or attend both! Through the morning and afternoon of September 30, 2016, Stephen Olmsted, PhD, ISST/CST-T (Duluth, MN) and Ellen Saul, MS, LP, ISST/CST-T (Faribault, MN) will be presenting on the Fundamentals of Sandplay: An Introduction to Kalffian Sandplay Therapy. CE for 6 credits has been submitted to the Minnesota Board of Psychology, Social Work and Marriage and Family Therapy. Beginning the evening of September 30, 2016, Paula Achenbach, Nancy Hawkins, Ellen Saul and Jacquelyn Wiersma will present a second workshop, “In Touch Again: A Multisensory Therapeutic Approach for Children and Adults with Attachment and Bonding Issues,” which will continue through October 2, 2016. CE for 12 credits has been submitted to the Minnesota Board of Psychology, Social Work and Marriage and Family Therapy.

Register by August 25, 2016 for an early registration discount off the regular price. Registration fee for the entire conference (9/30/16 – 10/2/16) includes 2 nights dorm style sleep accommodations, 7 meals, presentation, continuing education certificate, and snacks/refreshments.

  • Paula Achenbach, MS, LMFT-S, RPT-S, Equine Assisted Therapy, has worked with children and families for over 40 years as an early childhood teacher, parent educator, child/family therapy and presenter. In her private practice she spealizes in attachment and uses “In Touch,” Sandplay, art therapy and animal assisted therapy (horse and dog). She has presented at several conferences using her book, “I Don’t Want to Talk About It,” is a LMFT supervisor, and faculty at Alder MFT Graduate School.   

  • Nancy Hawkins, Psy.D., L.P., has spent much of her professional career providing consultation and therapy to Native American clients. She has specialized in issues related to the effects of disrupted attachment caused by historical trauma, out of home placement, and adoption. Nancy studied directly with Agnes Bayley, the originator of "In Touch Again" and has delivered many In Touch Again trainings to tribes, adoption agencies, and clinicians. Nancy is also an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

  • Stephen W. Olmsted, PhD, ISST/CST-T, stresses a multi-modal therapeutic orientation in his practice in Duluth, Mn and has extensive training and experience in Jungian-based sandplay therapy. He currently serves on the STA Board of Trustees as Secretary. Dr. Olmsted is also trained in EMDR and is a member of the EMDR International Association. Dr. Olmsted has worked extensively with children, adolescents, and adults who have been separated or estranged from their birth families. Dr. olmsted recently retired from his general practice but he continues to be available for consultation and for working with therapists desiring to complete their sandplay processes. 

  • Ellen H. Saul, MS, lP, ISST/CST-T, is a psychologist who works with children, families, individuals, and couples in a private practice In Faribault, Mn. She studied with Dr. Agnes Bayley and incorporates “In Touch Again” strategies in her therapeutic work. Her interest in Body, Mind, and Spirit connections led her to complete studies as a Somatic experiencing Practitioner, in addition to her broad scope of multi-modal approaches to healing work. She has recently accepted a position on the STA Board, after ten years of active participation (as secretary and president) on the Board of the Minnesota Sandplay Therapy Group (MSTG).

  • Jacquelyn K. Wiersma, PhD, STA Associate has studied and practiced sandplay since 1987. She is a founding and continuing member of MSTG, and she is currently a member of the STA Research Committee. In addition to her private practice in Minneapolis, she has taught in doctoral psychology training programs at St. Mary’s University, Minneapolis, the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Michigan. She has also worked as a senior training psychologist at Hennepin County Medical Center and as the Director of the Child Guid- ance Clinic at north Memorial Medical Center in Minneapolis.
